I was once a student and up until now, I still remember how it feels to be one. Life has to move on and there will be changes and we must learn how to adapt to these changes. Personally, I don’t have anything against change, it’s accepted…most of the times. Unfortunately, as much as we love change, there are some that is not….good.
I understand the rigors of hormones erratically secreted all over and crisis of different kinds haunt a student’s life, and it is part of growing and maturation to be able to survive such encounters. Unfortunately, students nowadays are all taking the easy way thru life. They want to be pampered and not terrorized. I must admit, before I told myself, when I become the teacher, I will pass all of my students. But then again, there will be changes. Now that I’m a teacher, as much as I love to, I can’t.
I must balance the gratification and give the right complements to the right people. I cannot just give a grade of 95% to all of my students, irregardless of their effort, that would be unfair, right? As much as possible I want their learning experience to be as relax as possible, but I guess, most of them would not appreciated this, and would rather have a teacher that terrorizes. I guess, I don’t share their opinions on how to become a good student.
You see, for me, being a good student is not being a goody-two-shoes pupil, but someone that takes his/her life seriously. I may have been a TARANTADONG ESTUDYANTE before, in the sense that, I was satisfied with what I was getting, although at the back of my mind I know I’m better than those getting the UNOS! Yet, I would rather enjoy my student life than spend most of it reading books. But that’s just it, I may not be that studious type, but I sure know my capabilities, and it’s this characteristic that I want to show my students. Being a STUBBORN PRICK as I am, I know how to accept the consequences of my actions. If I fail a subject, that is because I KNOW that I did not do my best and that I deserve my grade.
But with the students now, you give them leniency and yet they would want more. No wonder people are saying the the standards are going down. I AGREE 100%! If even if a teacher would want to tell his/her students how to become a good person, how to hurdle troubles in life, but he’s just a teacher and someone that is under the dictations of the school he or she works in. This is what I am proud of my ALMA MATER, FEU-NRMF, they’ve pushed us to the limits of crazyness, so we will be used to the hardships in studying, so that when we go out to the real world, everything now will be easier.
I am for a RELAX teaching environment, where the line between the teacher and the student is just a thin one. What I am not for, is for an environment where we SPARE THE ROD, which will really SPOIL THE CHILD. I pity them, the students, and the administration, because now, we SACRIFICE THE QUALITY of education for the QUANTITY as they are afraid that we lose the students to other schools. I pity the students, because they think they are winning the “battle” against their so-called rights in the classroom, but let me tell you, YOU’RE THE LOSER in the end.
