No power, No water

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

It’s the 3rd day post Milenyo and THANK GOD that power has been restored here in our place. Even though it was supposed to be a long weekend, it seemed eternity when there is no electricity.

The first day was fine, without electricity, it’s acceptable and understandable. But the 2nd day became worst, still without power, everybody’s becoming agitated. A day without power is something that the new generation kids can’t stand, but for our generation, a day without power is ok. But a day without water is definitely NOT OK. In our place, majority of the household depends on electricity for water since almost everybody uses water pump for their water supply. Thus, no electricity, no water too.

Since there were rumors that it might take more than 3 days before the power is restored, we decided to buy a generator set. And buying one is not easy espcially during these times of crisis. SM’s ACE hardware sold out all their stocks of Generator Sets in a day and they were not sure when they’ll get the new set of batches. Just to be on the safe side, I decided to join the long list of waiting customers. While waiting for the call, we decided to look around town for better deals, we went to MAKRO — no generator sets, we went to Robinson’s HANDYMAN — SOLD OUT their stocks as well a day before. Feeling hopeless, we drove the way home, when we came across a small store selling 2nd hand generator sets. Making sure, I decided to go and ask around, good thing, the store clerk if they are selling small generator sets good for a small home, and good thing, she said that a new batch of brand new units will be coming in late in the day, and if we are willing to give a deposit, she will reserve one for us. As we are becoming desperate (too desperate in fact), we agreed on the deal and would just go back in the afternoon. When we went back, there were around 6 families waiting for the said generators, which up until that time, still hasn’t arrived according to the sales clerk. After waiting for 2 hours, the truck finally came and everybody was so happy. The atmosphere during the unpacking and testing of the units were as if, we were waiting for the ration of food from a starving community.

The irony of the story is, when we got home, when I was about to plug the generator into the home socket, the power was restored. Although, very ironic, at least next time this thing happens, we are now better equiped.
